SKI AND SNOWBOARD CAMP FOR KIDS

Southern California – Mountain High

THE BLUE ANGELS YOUTH SKI AND SNOWBOARD CAMP was established in 1992 to give Southern California children and teens the opportunity to ski or snowboard the local mountains with friends and other snow-sport enthusiasts in a structured environment with a ski instructor or snowboard instructor serving as teacher, mentor and mountain guide. This unique ski and snowboard camp for kids offers 5 Saturday day ski and snowboard trips to Mountain High Ski Resort to residents living near these areas: the greater Los Angeles region, Orange County, San Diego, San Fernando Valley, Palos Verdes, Pasadena and Riverside County.

Mountain High is Southern California’s closest winter resort located just an hour and a half from Los Angeles and Orange County. The area consists of three separate mountains (Mountain High East, West, and North), and offers a wide variety of lifts and trails, a world-class terrain park, an outstanding Winter Sports School, and the region’s largest tubing area. Snowmaking covers more than 80% of the slopes. Mountain High has been the first resort to open in Southern California for the past 17 years and traditionally operates from mid November to mid April.

INSTRUCTION

Ski Instruction and snowboard lessons are provided by PSIA-AASI trained ski and snowboard instructors. Blue Angel ski program coaches are each assigned to a class of  8-10 participants, comparable in age and ability, for the 5 Saturday sessions. We require that participants remain with their instructor at all times; however, the coaches are experienced at finding just the right balance between technical instruction, free skiing/riding and fast-paced fun on the slopes to ensure that everyone is having a good time AND learning plenty!

SUPERVISION

Blue Angel Snow chaperones (parents, teachers and youth leaders) escort participants to and from the resort on our luxury charter motor coaches to ensure a smooth ride, pre-arrival preparation and a good time. Additional support staff and supervisors are also on location at the resort, overseeing base facility operations, on-snow group placement and mountain safety. Participants are always under the supervision of volunteer chaperones and instructors or Blue Angels staff.

LUNCH/SNACKS

Lunch is provided each program day by outside vendors and local. Vegetarian options are available, upon request. Healthy snacks and drinks are also provided throughout the day at our slope side “Hydration Station”. We do not provide food or drinks for the bus ride to and from the mountain.

Orientations & Info Sessions

Prospective parents and participants are encouraged to come learn more about the Blue Angels program, while New Participants (plus a parent/legal guardian) are required to attend one of the scheduled orientations. We will review the Program Guide, discuss equipment options, group level placement, bus locations on-off snow supervision and more! The meetings will conclude with a question/answer session. Returning participants do not need to attend and will receive further trip preparation information via email.

Ski and Snowboard Equipment must be obtained prior to each ski trip. Ski and snowboard equipment and clothing packages are available through Sports Basement, with locations in Orange County and Long Beach. Equipment may be purchased, rented or leased for the season with special Blue Angel discounts available, upon request.

For additional ski/snowboard equipment rental and purchasing locations click here.

SPORTS BASEMENT SEASON LEASE PROGRAM

Gear up for the season with equipment lease packages starting at $218 or get the “works” for $403 (all clothing and gear included).

EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Equipment and clothing should be clearly marked with participants first and last name along with bus pick up location. The most effective way to keep track of equipment is to use a waterproof marker (Sharpie) to write your child’s info on masking tape affixed to the gear. Label all loose items including skis/snowboards, poles, boots, bags, jackets, helmets, goggles, etc.

SKIS AND SNOWBOARDS

Ski and/or snowboard equipment must be obtained prior to each Saturday’s departure. For safety reasons, we require every participant to obtain the latest ski/snowboard equipment, including:

Skis or snowboard with bindings that have recently been inspected
Ski or snowboard boots that fit properly
Ski poles (skiers only). Some younger participants may not need ski poles. Please ask if unsure.

CLOTHING

Participants are also required to come prepared for all weather conditions. Temperatures in the mountains range from below freezing to 65-70 degrees. Proper ski/snowboard attire includes:

Ski/snowboard pants and jacket – insulated and waterproof
Thermal underwear
Ski sweater or heavy sweatshirt
Ski/snowboard gloves or mittens – waterproof and insulated
Helmet – required
Face protection – scarf and/or neck gaiter
Ski/snowboard socks

SUN PROTECTION

It is imperative that all participants have proper protection from the harmful rays of the sun. The sun’s rays are more powerful at high altitude (even on cloudy days), and can cause permanent eye damage and severe sunburn. Goggles – Participants must obtain a good pair of ski/snowboard goggles to protect his/her eyes from the ultra-violet rays of the sun and for visibility during snow storms. Sunscreen – All participants are required to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of the skin (lips, face, ears, etc.) in the morning prior to departure.

Your child will get the most out of the program if he or she is dressed in the appropriate attire and is constantly protected from the natural elements. Please consult your local shop for additional advice regarding equipment and clothing.

Bus locations are located throughout Southern California to transport participants to our home resorts, Mountain High. Our transportation partner is Lux Bus America. This is the GREATEST, MOST PROFESSIONAL, FUN ADVENTURE my family has experienced when it comes to skiing and snowboarding! My twin teenagers have had the BEST time with this program. They have learned a LOT from their LOVING, FUN, HELPFUL instructors. I got to chaperone, and what a terrific experience that is! We can’t stop talking about how awesome the Blue Angels experience is!

-Wendy Morris (Nick & Zack)

Great people and program!  My boys loved it doing both skiing and boarding.  The kids really learn to love riding on the snow.  With the fantastic instruction they get way better every year.  I really suggest this program.

-Glenn (Brandon & Justin)

Great program for youth!  We have been doing this program for years and every year I ask my boys if they want to do it again the answer is always the same, YES absolutely.  They leave the bus in the morning with their instructors and return at the end of the day with tales of every run they have done on the mountain.  I love hearing the excitement in their voices. There is no better way to spend a winter Saturday if you are a kid then with Blue Angels.

-Katie (Miles, Marshall, Kasey)

If your child loves to ski or snowboard — or really wants to learn how — this is an excellent program for him or her. This will be my son’s 6th year as a participant and he has grown from a beginner to a highly skilled skier who handles any run with safety and confidence. By the 3rd year in the program, my son had already learned way more than I could teach him! He’s also gained many other skills from his Blue Angels experience, such as keeping organized, using judgment, observing changing weather conditions and maintaining energy during a day-long ski trip. Heidi is an amazingly caring and involved program director who literally moves mountains and keeps a close eye on the kids. This program is the perfect way for kids to ski or snowboard all winter long when parents don’t have the time, energy or money to make multiple trips to Mammoth or Colorado!

-Lynn (Graham)

I cannot thank Blue Angels enough. This program is the reason for my success so far. It was there that I fell in love with the snow, and I wouldn’t be chasing my dreams had I not done Blue Angels. Huge thanks for the gift!

-Austin (participant)
