Snowboard and Ski Lessons for Kids

Northern California – Sierra at Tahoe

Blue Angel Snow was established to give Bay Area children and teens the opportunity to ski or snowboard the Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts with friends and other snow-sport enthusiasts in a structured environment with a ski instructor or snowboard instructor serving as teacher, mentor and mountain guide. The Blue Angels ski program offers 5 Saturday ski trips to Sierra-at-Tahoe for ages 8 to 16, all ability levels.

Sierra at Tahoe offers 2,000 acres of skiing, a 2,212′ Vertical Rise, with an elevation of 8,852 at the summit and lake view. Sierra has 46 trails offering terrain for everyone with 25% marked as green, 50% blue, and 25% black. There are 14 total lifts and we receive over 400+ inches of annual snowfall. INSTRUCTION

Instruction is provided by a select group of  ski and snowboard instructors. “Blue Angel” coaches are each assigned to a class of 8-10 participants, comparable in age and ability, for the 5 Saturday sessions. We require that participants remain with their instructor at all times; however, the coaches are experienced at finding just the right balance between technical instruction, free skiing/riding and fast-paced fun on the slopes to ensure that everyone is having a good time AND learning plenty!

SUPERVISION

Blue Angel chaperones (parents of participants, teachers or representatives from other youth organizations) escort participants to and from the resort on our luxury charter motor coaches to ensure a smooth ride, pre-arrival preparation and a good time. Additional support staff and supervisors are also on location at the resort, overseeing base facility operations, on-snow group placement and mountain safety. Participants are always under the supervision of volunteer chaperones and instructors or Blue Angels staff.

LUNCH/DINNER/SNACKS

Lunch is provided each program day, with vegetarian options available upon request. Snacks and drinks are also provided throughout the day. Participants need to provide their own food and drinks for the bus ride to and from the mountain as well as $7-10 for a fast-food dinner stop on the way home. Please notify us of any food allergies or dietary restrictions.

NEW PARTICIPANT ORIENTATION MEETINGS

Equipment Checklist

Ski and snowboard equipment and clothing should be clearly marked with participants first and last name along with bus pick up location. The most effective way to keep track of equipment is to use a waterproof marker (Sharpie) to write your child’s info on masking tape affixed to the gear. Label all loose items including skis/snowboards, poles, boots, bags, jackets, helmets, goggles, etc.

SKIS AND SNOWBOARDS

Ski and/or snowboard equipment must be obtained prior to each Saturday’s departure. For safety reasons, we require every participant to obtain the latest ski/snowboard equipment, including:

Skis or snowboard with bindings that have recently been inspected
Ski or snowboard boots that fit properly
Ski poles (skiers only). Some younger participants may not need ski poles. Please ask if unsure.

CLOTHING

Participants are also required to come prepared for all weather conditions. Temperatures in the mountains range from below freezing to 65-70 degrees. Proper ski/snowboard attire includes:

Ski/snowboard pants and jacket – insulated and waterproof
Thermal underwear
Ski sweater or heavy sweatshirt
Ski/snowboard gloves or mittens – waterproof and insulated
Blue Angel helmet (required)
Face protection – scarf and/or neck gaiter
Ski/snowboard socks

SUN PROTECTION

It is imperative that all participants have proper protection from the harmful rays of the sun. The sun’s rays are more powerful at high altitude (even on cloudy days), and can cause permanent eye damage and severe sunburn. Goggles – Participants must obtain a good pair of ski/snowboard goggles to protect his/her eyes from the ultra-violet rays of the sun and for visibility during snow storms. Sunscreen – All participants are required to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of the skin (lips, face, ears, etc.) in the morning prior to departure.

Your child will get the most out of the ski camp if he or she is dressed in the appropriate attire and is constantly protected from the natural elements. Please consult your local shop for additional advice regarding equipment and clothing.

Northern California Bus Schedule

I have been a chaperone with the Blue Angels for several seasons.  The staff members are wonderful and so is the Sierra at Tahoe Resort.  Because my children are in the Blue Angels, then they have a lot more time on the slopes than if I were to drive them and sign up for lessons every time.  Instead, we just relax on the bus – watching movies and chatting with friends.  And if there is the need for chains, then the bus driver takes care of it.  The staff and logistics are great – and so are the coaches.  With the Blue Angels, the participants have the same “coach” and are with the same group for all of their sessions.

I cannot say enough good things about Blue Angels Ski program.  It is so run so well, and is the perfect way for kids to learn how to ski – or to improve their skiing abilities.  The bus ride is fun for them, and my boys come home talking about their ski instructors.  I highly recommend Blue Angels to any families that want their kids to get in ski days.

My son and I have participated in the program for the last 4 years and LOVED it! Basically, it’s a ski program that buses kids from all over the Bay Area up to Sierra-at-Tahoe for a day of skiing, 5 Saturdays starting in late January. The kids get a full day of ski lessons, lunch, and a ride to and from the ski hill.

Whether your child is already an experienced skier or snowboarder and loves the mountain or is just starting out, this is a great program.   My son was an intermediate skier when we first started with Blue Angels and was skiing Black Diamonds last year.  What’s great is that it’s not just a 2-hour lesson.  They’re with instructors the whole day and the instructors make sure that the day is a good mix of learning and fun.

I also felt that my son was in good hands and well-looked after all day.  When the kids are on the bus, there are 3-4 chaperones who make sure that they are happy and safe.  G & PG movies are shown each way, so the bus ride flies by. The chaperones make sure that kids get to and from the bus safely, eat some lunch and dinner, are comfortable on the bus, etc. They also help the younger ones get their gear on and hang out in the lodge if kids aren’t feeling well or aren’t up for skiing (though they encourage everyone to be out on the hill!).

My son looks forward to this program each year.  He’s made some great friends and become a fantastic skier.  I can’t recommend this program highly enough.

Ari graduated from Berkeley High School, and is now in his freshman year at UC Santa Cruz, after a heart wrenching choice among many schools, lucky guy!  The best part to tell you is that Ari immediately “found” his social group at UCSC among the snowboarding community of students!  He was elected to an office as the first ever freshman officer and these young people have become Ari’s friends and peers.  He went along with all of them as a 17-year-old in December to Colorado to the week-long event that all UC’s send their ski and snowboarding students too (the UC clubs).  He had a wonderful time, racing and snowboarding.  As parents, you know this is the best news:  that your kid has found a community of like-minded people at college.  Indeed, Ari’s dad and I thank you both for your contribution to encouraging Ari’s love of snowboarding, which, in turn, has brought him a new community at college.  We are grateful to you and wanted to let you know.
